Blurry Pixmas! (Or, Merry Christmas!)

Seeing as how it's Christmas morning, I thought I'd play the role of Santa and sneak a little gift under the tree for everyone...a blurred-out overview of the entire Adventure Apes game!
Now, you're probably scratching your head and asking yourself, "Why the heck can't he give us a nice clear, crisp HD version of the map?!", and I'll tell you why. It goes a little something like this...

Way back when I was a little kid, home computers didn't exist, and the internet wasn't even a word anyone would recognize. My brother and I would go to video stores and rent cartidges for our NES, and what we rented was largely based on two things; playing the games at a friend's house, or seeing the game in Nintendo Power. Nintendo Power was great, because you'd get reviews of current games, as well as the occasional preview of unreleased games. To me, that was the most exciting part, because there would be a couple blurbs about what the game was going to be about, and if you were really lucky, there would be some pictures taken of the game itself! Those pictures would often be TINY and BLURRY, but it didn't matter, because my imagination would fill in the rest...and to this day, I think it was because those pictures were so blurry and cryptic that anticipation for the next game would be so high.
So, in the spirit of Christmas, and the spirit of the blurry photograph, I present to you the full-blown world map for the Adventure Apes. Ho ho ho!

Well friends, it has been a very long time since anything got posted here! Since announcing that the Adventure Apes would be made for the Nintendo DSI, a lot of work was done to set the game up for the system. We put in tons of time to get any hurdles out of the way, and made good progress on the game.
Unfortunately though, finding time to get every aspect of the game finished and ready for submission killed it in the end. It's a very sad event for sure, as it seemed to be going so well early on, but it was not meant to be I suppose.

On the flip side, it is not all bad news! The fact that there is no longer any obligation to get something done under Nintendo's license means that I can once again put the game files back up on the Adventure Apes website for everyone to play for free. In the meantime, I'll be working on two new games, one of which will be the full design that would have been the DSI version! I'm also hoping to start rolling out a couple products on the website in the near future.

It's a definite change of gears from the direction things were headed this past year, but when life gives you lemons, make lemonade!

Wallpaper Mania!!

So yeah, the last little while has been spent not doing as much art as I would have liked, but I did manage to push out these wallpapers for each of the characters in the Adventure Apes universe. In order from top to bottom, they are:
Mitch (Do-gooder)
Otis (Do-gooder)
Dr. A (Do-gooder)
Mr. E (Evil schemer)
Horatio (Evil schemer)

My intention was to let the personality of each character come through:
Mitch is upbeat and eager to take on new challenges
Otis is a big goofball
Dr. A is old and kind of beat up from a long life of adventurin' and crime fightin'
Mr. E is a very old creeper
and Horatio clearly thinks very highly of himself!

The resolution for these files is huge, so if you can scale them down to the right size, good. If not, you should be able to 'fit' the wallpapers on any 4:3 ratio monitor (I think). If you have a widescreen monitor, just set the background color to black beforehand, and you should be good to go!

The time is here for me to make a couple changes to what exactly goes on in this blog you see before you. As you may or may not know, my beloved Adventure Apes has gone into development for DSiWare recently, and it means making a push to get the name out there as best as I can! So what I've decided to do is switch everything over to a new blog where the focus will be on the Adventure Apes themselves rather than what I have been working on lately. That doesn't mean this blog is going away by any means, but what will happen is this blog will open up to include any sort of things I happen to be working on, not just the monkeys!

So, if you want to keep an eye on all the happenings within the Adventure Apes universe, please, mosey on over to their blog here ---> (Adventure Apes HQ)

But by all means, if you want to stay up to date on all things Potato-y, stay put.

Actually, you know what, check them both out, because you know as well as I that the world can never have too many monkeys, or potatoes!

Whew! It was a bit of a whirlwind lesson in html, along with what NOT to do when making a website, but I've got something set up now. Looks pretty good too:) It is little more than a shell of a website at the moment as there isn't much content, but it's a good start. As things progress with the game here and there, you can expect to find more and more things added to the site. Breaking the Silence...

Wow! It has been almost a full year since the last post with any news about the Adventure Apes. It may have taken a little longer than anticipated getting things off the ground, but all the paperwork is out of the way, so here goes:

The Adventure Apes are officially coming to the Nintendo DSi!

It means starting things from the ground up, and while it implies lots of tedious work, it also means that things will be refined and improved upon from the old PC version (links of the game file have been removed to avoid any conflicts, confusion, and/or setbacks to the progress of the game).

The reasons for wanting to make the Adventure Apes are many, but the biggest one by far is the simple fact that it's the best fit. The Adventure Apes is primarily geared towards a younger age demographic (mainly the tweens, but you are forgiven if monkeys with guns appeals to the kid in you as well!), and the DSi caters to a younger crowd, while other handhelds seem to target slightly older users.

You might be asking yourself, "Why the DSi when the 3DS is already available?"
Well, we've got to test the market out. The user base for the DSi is still huge, so it's a good way to gauge reaction to the Adventure Apes once it is done. We are a licensed 3DS developer however, so if the response is positive for the DSiWare version, chances are pretty good the next one will be on the 3DS, but I'm getting ahead of things now!

So, there you have it, the ball is officially rolling. Thanks to everyone over this extended period of time who have stuck with us and helped to keep things in line.

Half a year since the last post, but looks like everything is still up and running! It has been a very busy past few months, lots of learning and growing, and plugging away relentlessly on the game project. It's time for a little break though, and I do hope everyone out there has a very happy holidays with their friends and loved ones!

Adventure Apes + Game Porting= Happy Day!

If you've been wondering recently why there hasn't been too much in terms of updates for the game related stuff recently, the answer is quite simple...I was recently approached to port the game over to a handheld system! For a complete newcomer to the whole game making biz, it came as a complete shock, as well as a dream come true to have my little monkey crew made available to large base of people, and if a little money comes in as a result, all the better :)
Everything is in the very, VERY beginning stages at this point, and I'm sure as the project progresses, changes will be made to many aspects of the game in order to make it a top notch product. Perhaps the greatest advantage with an undertaking like this is that I won't be working alone on it. Reduced individual workload and greater brainstorming capacity will be very much welcome!
I look at this as a once in a lifetime opportunity, where if it gets done right, could lead the way to bigger and better things for the Adventure Apes, happy day indeed!!

Level 3-2 Mockup

Here's the second portion of level 3, the lava caves! It's going to have the same sort of concept as level 3-1 with the seamless tiles for floors and walls. I think that there are possibilities for some fun problem-solving in this level as my intent is to have switches to raise/lower the magma levels in order to gain access to items and doors. Add to that the red laser weapon from level 2 to unblock restricted areas, and the Ghost Vision ability (which will let the player see objects and enemies hidden from normal view) in level 3-3, and the game should end up with a pretty good mix of puzzles! Fingers crossed.... :)

I decided to try something a little different this time around. Typically, I've done sketches of the layout and rooms on grid paper to figure out placement of blocks/items/enemies. It works great for the design of the level, but not the atmosphere. So, I decided to put together a quick sketch to see how this part of the game might look. It will be different from the first two levels in that there are no individual/carved blocks for the floors and walls, instead I'm going to try coming up with a randomly generated seamless tile. There were a few elements in level two that were generated randomly (blocks and plants specifically), and I think the result was kind of fun, so I'll continue that trend here and see how it goes!

I put this together mainly as a result of a game design expo that I had the privilege of attending recently. One of the guest speakers (Matt McLean from Obsidian) was truly exceptional, and the comment that most stuck out in my mind from his speech was that "you can never show the control scheme for a game too much. Even if it's in the instruction booklet, chances are it won't be seen."
And just like that, a little piece of my heart sank. I had spent a few months worth of evenings putting together the art and layout for a true retro style instruction booklet to help reinforce the old-school vibe off my current game! His point is completely valid...I never really read those things as a kid for the instructions, it was the art I was after, and even now, I may take a quick glance through them, but never really pay much attention to the controls. So, my solution is to replace the current pause screen with this diagram, and hopefully avoid leaving the player frustrated or wondering what button does what exactly.

Squidephant Wallpaper!

I needed to do something to get my head out of game-code mode for a little while, and I thought that a perfect way to do that would be to make a couple new wallpapers for the site! After going back and forth on a few different style directions, I figured that the most suitable thing to do would be to make things that look like Mayan jewelry to represent the bosses in the game. Sure, I started out of order with the second boss, but he (and his level in the game) have been ingrained into my mind for the past six months, so cut me some slack already! Next will be the Skull Demon :)

New Game Images!

I posted some pics not too long ago as level two was in the middle stages of being done. The level is more or less complete, but will need some tweaking here and there before it's up to snuff. While the code is plugged away on, I offer you these new in-game images:

The gamefile is available for downloading from the Adventure Apes' site. The site itself is looking kind cluttered and dated, so I'm hoping to have a new looking site sometime in the near future as well. Right now, I've just kind of been throwing stuff in there as I update the game instead of keeping is tidy and organized. So be on the look out for that too!

Don't let the goofy name throw you off, this guy is one bad mutha! Part squid, part elephant, and part...spiky-shelled sea-thing, Squidephant is an ornery beast, and Mitch is intruding on his territory!
I was a little hesitant posting this since people can see how to beat the boss, but he looks so darned cool that I couldn't resist. Enjoy :)

Mayan Mystery Gameplay Update

Here's a little peek into the Mayan underworld, courtesy of the Adventure Apes! The game has undergone quite a few improvements lately, and level two is getting very close to being complete...probably one or two months away from being ready :) This little video doesn't shed too much light onto the game so much as it shows the general atmosphere you can expect...lush, dark, and danger lurking around every corner!!

It occurred to me a while ago that people found level 1 of the Mayan Mystery a bit tricky to navigate because the graphics were the same throughout. Even with the occasional 'helpful' message from Otis and/or Dr. A, I think that it probably frustrated more than a few people until they got their bearings with the temple layout as a whole. With that said, I've been putting together level 2, and am hoping that the experience will be much better for the player. There are three main sections of the level, each with its own distinct look and music. These screenshots are very early stages of the level of course, just to give a sense of the graphic style for each section. Development is coming along nicely, but it is a little slow, simply because level 2 is set to be hugely gigantic!

It's been a little while since I've posted anything for the storybook here, but it has been getting worked on, and here's the proof! Recently, I decided to try changing up my process a little bit in an attempt to keep things fresh and fluid instead of trying to pound out one thing at a time...meaning that I'll be rotating what I do week by week: Line art/story related stuff/game design/coding related stuff. We'll see how it turns out, but hopefully it will keep each required skill from getting too rusty. Anyhow, here's a peek at some of the latest storybook pages!

It's probably been a couple of months since I last posted any artwork here. Level one of the game is complete and got some good responses through the month of October, much more than I ever thought imaginable! Level two for the full version is well in development, and now, FINALLY, I've gotten back to doing artwork for my storybook. This is page three of what will be a 27 page illustrated poem that outlines Mitch's first adventure.
Time to get back in the swing of things!

Giving Thanks

I know, I know, "Another post with no pictures...what's going on?!"

Well, it's a week before Thanksgiving here in Canada, but so far, the month has been very kind to the Adventure Apes, and I thought I should write down a few words of thanks. The first big break was the interview at Vancouver Animation. One question in the interview asked what I found most difficult, and I said that by far the business side was the hardest to break in to. Starting out as no one, it's tough to gain any recognition or attention from your peers and contemporaries. I believe the exposure from that interview will help pave the way for the Apes. For that, I am thankful!

Then today I received further good news! Completely out of the blue, the game was featured on two sites:

PixelProspector - This is a review site that goes through and picks out all kinds of interesting games on a regular basis. Imagine my surprise to get an email saying that the Adventure Apes game is featured and reviewed!

GameJolt - I had uploaded the game to this site recently to see what kind of feedback I'd get, but never expected that the folks running the show would feature the game on the front page of their site!

These two sites combined have already helped thrust this game into the spotlight more than I could have ever accomplished on my own, and for that, I am thankful!

So, no images in this post, but there is a veritable cornucopia of good news. I wonder if the full moon this weekend had anything to do with these good fortunes? No matter what the cause though, I am thankful.

Ode to the Adventure Apes

A while back, I posted a bunch of images for the bad guys involved in this project. Originally, the plan was to include them in an illustrated storybook describing Mitch's experiences as he explored the Mayan temple. I have decided to change things up somewhat..the story was coming out really flat and not interesting to read at all, and I just couldn't see how it'd have anyone eager to turn the page to see what happens next, let alone a kid! So, the story will now be told in the form of an epic poem as seen through Mitch's eyes...and yes, it will be illustrated! I will post the drawings once I get 'em done, but here are a few random verses in the meantime:

"The old temple ran North, East, West and South,
I'm in its bowels, yet entered its mouth.
Perhaps you may need some time to digest,
but believe what's been said, heroes know best!"

"Rooms carved from limestone the Mayans did build,
though not long after, with water they filled.
The rooms were small and the passageways tight,
this is a place where nobody should fight."

"Towers of flame and black smoke belched in plumes,
I wished there's a way that this would end soon!
But onward I went, to get the bad guy,
and dreamt of the day where I'd see blue sky."

Adventure Apes Update and Screenshots!

So, this whole 'making a video game' thing is pretty time consuming. I've been posting updates on a regular basis over at the yoyogames forums, and the people there have really helped turn this game into something presentable! It seems like every time I think the game is done, a new suggestion is made, or I think of ways to tweak things here and there. One idea that I think I'll go with for the full 3-level game is to have a track selector option rather than songs getting played according to the room and level. That way the player will be able to choose which song gets played. That means coming up with a ton of songs, but it should be pretty cool when it's all said and done!

Level 1 has undergone a ton of improvements this past week as far as gameplay goes. As usual, I'll be going through to make sure nothing else needs fixing, but it is getting so good! Here are some updated screenshots, taken at their original resolution, however the game scales everything up 200% so that it is a little easier to play:)

Adventure Apes Shirt Designs!

I've been trying out a couple ideas for shirts lately, and here are some quick mock-ups of them. The surfer one of course is familiar (see previous post), the bananas logo is Adventure Apes' logo, and then I thought I'd try out something a little different with the stylized monkey skull. It turned out pretty cool, so I'm thinking more may be in the works!

Another round of fine-tuning is done, and things are shaping up really nicely! Level one as of today is error free, and requires next to no touch-ups, apart from the odd thing that irritates me from a coding point of view. Below is a rundown of the level, from start to finish..no glitz, no glamour, all glory!! I had realized a major problem in the game that needed addressing, and here is the result! In the previous version, it was difficult to lose all your lives, so chances are that no one noticed that the game wouldn't know what to do if you DID die off! The problem has been fixed by making the game a little tougher, as well as adding a little mini-game type idea where you float around a room as Mitch's angel and have to collect three hearts if you want to restart the game. Pointless fun, but fun nonetheless!

After a couple weeks of working night and day, level one is complete!! I'll be doing through and looking for bugs to fix, but as it stands right now, you can go through and find everything, shoot everything, beat the boss etc etc.
The demo here is a teaser for all the weapons in the whole game (two of them are found in level one; Blue Raygun and the Sawgun) Be warned though, if you don't watch your ammo, when you get to the boss you will be in real trouble. He is one seriously tough hombre!! Oh, and you will find the link to download the game file at www.adventureapes.com, and www.scarypotato.com!

So, I'm working a bit backwards with this in that you won't actually battle Horatio until you blast his Golden Egg to smithereens (that'll be the first illustration, this is the second). It does seem like a better way to introduce him to the world though since you actually see his character on this page, the other will just be his Golden Egg vehicle.

A little background on Horatio....

*Was in the same orphanage as Mitch and Otis, but was always an outsider.
*He always took things from other kids in the orphanage just to see them cry!
*Adopted by the enigmatic Mr.E, who is incredibly rich and has raised Horatio to use whatever means necessary to eventually own everything in the world.
*Loves watching old WWF matches when he's not bent on world domination.

The Mighty Squidephant

Found in the darkest depths of the underwater portion of the Mayan Mystery, the Squidephant waits patiently for its next tasty meal. This guy is going to be the 2nd Level boss in the game, which will include lots of swimming, bombing, and lasers. Look out!

As promised, I re-did the colouring on several pages to bring it up to speed with the more recent posts and figured that probably the easiest way to look at them would be to put them into one file, so here it is! It's something like 4.5mb, so it isn't small, but it will be nice and clear when you look at it as each page will show up as 640x640 on your screen. Hope you like it!

***EDIT*** Even though the file uploaded was over 4mb and 1280px wide, the one you can view is only a fraction of that size, 193kb so I apologize for that. Boss One: The Skull Demon!!

One serious piece of business, the Skull Demon is relentless in his attack on Mitch. It'll take quick wits and lots of ammo to finish him off.

I find the pose pretty stiff, so I might redo it, but my intention was to try and show all the things in the book in different poses than what you find in the instruction booklet and all these drawings are more to be used as diagrams of the enemies instead of action poses. Hm, maybe it'll stay. What do you think?

Wallpapers etc!

Here is a mix of different styles and looks for a bunch of free wallpapers for my Adventure Apes, as well as the base logos used in the background. Most of them are 100% done, I believe the Stickytongue and the Reflection are the only ones never finished completely though. I just recently bought a brush pen and love using it, so am thinking that the next batch will be done with line art using that, then digital colouring, much like the story illustrations.

By my figuring, there should be four more pages of creatures that you will see in the video game, a couple more maps, and of course the bosses for each level. I hope to have a bunch of jungle scenery to show what Mitch went through just to get to the mysterious temple in the first place, not to mention a drawing of the temple itself! Lots to do yet it seems:)

These are a few pages from a reference manual that gives the reader/player a rundown of the surroundings and creatures inside the Mayan temple, along with maps and hints to make finding things a little easier. Of course if you use the book to finish the game you are a CHEATER, but I won't judge you.

I suppose that the most significant thing that I've done regarding the Adventure Apes is create a video game from scratch that follows their adventures. It has taken an incredibly long time and huge amount of effort into getting it to the point that it is now, and it is the first thing that I would like to share with everyone, so here is a video clip of the game as played by yours truly!

In the beginning...

For the past year or so, I have been spending my time coming up with ideas that revolve around my two favourite monkeys; Mitch and Otis a.k.a. the Adventure Apes! The two are orphans who have been taken under the wing of the kind Dr. A, an aging adventurer/crime fighter. The time has come for Dr. A to hang up his boots and hand the reigns over to the two young friends, who for years have been studying and training under Dr. A's scrutiny.

First, a little background on the two new heroes...

Mitch is the brains of the duo. He can be short-tempered at times, but is genuinely a good little monkey. He is quick and nimble on his feet as well.

Otis is the muscle. Big and slow, he neither gets around as fast nor thinks with the sharp wit of his best friend Mitch.

Their first mission was to be sent deep into the Mayan jungle to retrieve a stolen artifact and return it to the rightful owners, however while they were being told the details of the mission, Otis became so absorbed in the story that he forgot to breathe and passed out. For his safety (and everyone else's!), Dr. A thought it would be best for Otis to stay behind and rest. So, the mission to the Mayan jungle rest squarely on the shoulders of Mitch!

It is with these two characters in mind that I have begun putting together a myriad of different things to help expose them to the world. The majority of my posts will contain things of this nature. So if you like cartoons, monkeys, cartoon monkeys or even monkey cartoons, I think chances are pretty good that you will like looking through these humble offerings!
